Learn The Hard Facts About Child Drowning

Drowning is a serious danger for children. In fact, according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged one to four. This is why, in order to help parents to fully grasp the importance of water safety, we’ve created this helpful infographic.

A Pool Can Be More Dangerous Than a Gun

As you can see, this infographic is chock-full of important information. Politics aside, did you know that a swimming pool can actually be up to 100 times more likely to kill a child than a gun? Believe it or not, it’s true.

Many parents don’t realize that, on average, 390 children drown each year. Of these, 75% of these victims are less than five years old. To make matters worse, another alarming statistic involves parental supervision: 69% of many of these drowning accidents occurred while the child was under the supervision of one or both parents. On top of that, 46% of these drowned children were believed to be safely in their house.

How Can We Prevent Drownings?

The simple answer is not to rely on any single safety measure. Let multiple layers of protection help to prevent any water danger for your family.

1: Active Supervision

Don’t underestimate the power of active parental supervision as a way to make your pool safer. As we mentioned, tragedy can happen quickly in the water. This is why adults must keep a keen eye on any children near the water.

2: Pool Safety Fencing

A secure pool fence is a must-have item. At Life Saver Pool Fence, we believe that no one can ever be too careful, especially when it comes to protecting the lives of children. You can read more about how to choose the right pool fence for your home in our handy blog.

3: High Locks and Alarms on Doors and Windows

Install child safety chimes and alarms on any doors or windows that lead out to the pool. These will help to alert you if your child enters the pool area without your knowledge.

4: Rescue Education: Swimming Lessons, CPR and More.

CPR training can mean the difference between life, permanent disability, and even death. In the event that all other layers of protection fail, learning the importance of CPR, and becoming certified in it, is one of the smartest safety choices anyone can make.

Swimming lessons are equally important. No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to be properly trained to swim.
